Fergus Finlay’s attack is ‘incredulous’

I HAVE read Fergus Finlay’s column in Tuesday’s Irish Examiner (Nov 22) and I am appalled by his call to stop increments for Public Servants.

As a Civil Servant with over 25 years’ service, such a measure would not affect me as I have reached the maximum pay scale.

However, I work with many people who are still climbing the scales; they have young families, large mortgages and are surviving only by the skin of their teeth. As this measure will have a direct effect on their children and their standards of living I find it incredulous that the CEO of Barnardos, a children’s charity, would espouse such anti children sentiments.

Fergus Finlay has for a long number of years been a good campaigner for the rights of children and people with disabilities.

His attack on the rights of the low-paid public servants to receive increments is unjust and is more beholden to Eoghan Harris in the Sindo than to Fergus Finlay in The Irish Examiner, which I have found to have a balanced approach to the Public Service.
