Racism in politics - Resignation not enough

FINE GAEL councillor Darren Scully had no option but to resign as Mayor of Naas after he declared that he would not represent “black Africans” living in his area.

Racism in politics - Resignation not enough

Democracy is inclusive and Cllr Scully cannot be selective about whom he represents. Anyone in the area that elected him should expect his support unless their behaviour or credibility make that impossible. Equally, public representatives or officials must be treated with respect by anyone seeking advice or services. They cannot be intimidated or falsely accused of racism.

Cllr Scully has resigned as mayor but Fine Gael must extract a retraction and an apology from him or expel him from their party. Not to do so would cast a shadow over a Government with more than enough problems already.
