Breastfeeding boost in fight against diabetes

YOUR publication “Let’s Talk Diabetes” is quite informative, but there is no mention of infant nutrition. Research indicates that breastfed children have a lower risk of diabetes, both Type 1 and Type 2.

Breastfeeding boost in fight against diabetes

One of the 11 “Risks of Formula Feeding”, published by INFACT Canada, is an increased risk of diabetes. There are over 300 components in human breast milk which cannot be duplicated in formula, including hormonal factors that help control metabolism and appetite. Breast milk is easier to digest and has natural sugars. Early introduction of infant formula, solids and cow’s milk are factors shown to increase the incidence of Type 1 diabetes later in life.

Research has also established that breastfeeding helps prevent childhood and adult obesity, which are major risk factors for Type 2 diabetes.
