Fish dumping scandal

THE appalling immorality of tonnes of “unsuitable and non quota” white fish being dumped dead or dying into the Celtic, Irish and Atlantic seas is horrifying.

Fish dumping scandal

Millions are dying of hunger in the Horn of Africa and elsewhere and yet because of an unprincipled dictate from Brussels literally thousands of tonnes of protein lies unsalvageable on the Labadie Bank and across our sea floor. Do not wait, Minister Coveney, to get another tortuous agreement from Brussels.

Act within your own capability as marine minister — give an order to fishermen to separate quota from non-quota fish aboard the trawlers. Put two civil servants in oil skins into each fishing port — Union Hall, Castletownbere and Killybegs and others — with power to take over the non-quota fish and freeze them. Provide freeze containers. If you don’t have them, build them, and send these containers out to the hungry.
