IT’S little wonder that Mary Harney has disappeared from public discourse.

Are they proud of the Ireland they made?

There was a time when she was omnipresent.

She actively sought out the most high profile government portfolio — Health — and was actively sought out as Tánaiste by her erstwhile cousins (once removed) in Fianna Fáil. She always seemed to have either a sense of smug satisfaction in the knowledge that she had succeeded in steering politics here towards Thatcherite Boston as opposed to (presumably, social democratic) Berlin, or a sneer for all opponents of said deregulated capitalism. That was her style. But now she’s gone.
