Norris deserves vote even if he’s not on ballot

MYLES Duffy (Letters, Sept 13) has described an inclination by Senator David Norris to re-enter the presidential contest as “blinkered vanity that disregards other material considerations”.

Norris deserves vote even if he’s not on ballot

Surely the voters should be allowed the opportunity to have their say on this matter on October 27? I am reminded of a story concerning the opera singer Angela Gheorghiu who had a difficult relationship with the Metropolitan Opera’s General Manager, Joseph Volpe. In 1996 Gheorghiu was cast as Micaela in a production of Carmen which called for the singer to wear a blond wig.

Gheorghiu hated the wig and refused to wear it on the first night, prompting Volpe to declare, “the wig is going on, with you or without you”. Gheorghiu was replaced and the wig duly went on stage. On October 27 I’m going to vote for David Norris and if he’s not on the ballot paper, then so be it. For the first time ever I’ll be spoiling my vote as a mark of protest.
