Thatcher warning

I AM surprised that VE Barrett (Letters, August 24) reckons a Margaret Thatcher would be good for the country.

She was, together with her fellow monetarist, Ronald Reagan, responsible for the deregulation of the banking sector, which I’m sure we can agree is the fons et origo of our current crisis.

It was Thatcher who handed over politics to the media and made Rupert Murdoch the force he is today. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the arms trade and promoted her son’s activities in that area. Be careful what you wish for.
