Cyclists must observe respect for road users

IT was interesting to read the recent letter regarding cyclists and their treatment by motorists. It was, however, extremely one-sided.

I recently witnessed the following incidents of flagrant disregard by cyclists for the Rules of the Road:

- A cyclist weaving between two lanes of traffic stopped at a red traffic light and then continuing through the same red light.

- A cyclist proceeding in the wrong direction on a one-way street.

- A cyclist at considerable speed on a footpath.

- A cyclist travelling after dark without a rear light and wearing dark clothing.

All road users must do so with due care.

However, there exists rights and responsibilities for all these road users.

My experience with, I have to say, a considerable amount of cyclists on the roads, is one which displays little regard for their responsibilities. As respect is something that is earned rather than a gift, I find it difficult to see how their rights can be respected by motorists beyond that of basic safety.

Before motorists are blamed in full, please recall the words ‘people, glasshouses and stones’.
