Leaving Cert has many advantages

I agree with Justin Kelly that the current Leaving Cert system “has many flaws”.

But I think the continuous assessment system he has proposed has more fundamental flaws (Letters, August 9). The current Leaving Cert has many advantages. It is fair to all. It is not subjective. It is independent and anonymous.

It is, therefore, immune to manipulation. It requires diligence and hard work on behalf of the student to be successful. Continuous assessment, however, is not fair to all. It is subjective. It is neither independent nor anonymous. It is, therefore, open to manipulation.

It does not measure a student’s diligence and hard work, but how much the teacher can be influenced.
