Norris only has himself to blame for disaster
What nonsense to suggest that Mr Norris was forced to withdraw from the Presidential race.
The “smear campaign regarding interview tapes” is no different to what happened to the late Brian Lenihan Sr in his run for the Presidency in 1990.
With regard to the letter written on Oireachtas notepaper, other such interventions have been likewise the subject of controversy.
The name of Trevor Sargent comes to mind, et al.
I do not recall reading anything from anyone in any publication to suggest that homophobia was involved in the collapse of his campaign.
Nor did I hear of any bishop or other Catholic spokesperson make any adverse comment about Mr Norris.
No, the first people to derail the Norris campaign were his own senior staff followed by his former political backers.
Clearly his campaign team recognised the letter written by Mr Norris, on Oireachtas notepaper, seeking leniency for his lover in a court case in Israel, was extremely, nay lethally, damaging.
When a person runs for high office it is a truism that every aspect of their behaviour comes under scrutiny and it is only fair that Mr Norris should be subjected to the same scrutiny as all the other candidates.
