UNICEF’s dismissal of Verwoerd deplorable

THE action in dismissing Melanie Verwoerd by email is truly deplorable. Talk about kicking a woman when she is down.

What does this say to us as Irish society that this should be acceptable at any level? Ms Verwoerd has been successful in attracting donations to the charity. It is unacceptable that anyone should be treated in such a cold and callous manner.

If there was a problem in relation to media intrusion and unwanted media attention some gardening leave might have been a more appropriate strategy. The actions of the board have brought the charity into disrepute — at a time when its work is so important in the Horn of Africa. In the course of my work, I have helped raise funds for UNICEF and am truly appalled at the manner in which Ms Verwoerd has been treated. My own personal charitable donations will be steered toward an alternative charity if a fair and equitable resolution is not found.

This should include Ms Verwoerd’s reinstatement.
