Presidential contenders must prove their worth

I COULDN’T agree more with Anthony Woods when he said that “we can’t afford pomp and grandeur of Presidency” (Letters, June 21).

Neither can we afford the €325,000 that he/she will receive which amounts to €6,250 per week.

Would it not be a good idea to bring all these candidates together and find out how many of them would be willing to do this job for the honour and glory that goes with it?

These people have being telling us for years that they got into politics for the good of the country, now is a chance for them to prove it. Enter the names of those willing to do the job just for expenses and pocket money into a drum and draw one out, no need for election posters, saving a huge amount of money and no need for an election, saving even more.

This would surely sort out the true patriots from the rest.

Most of these candidates will have pensions from the Dáil or Senate in any case.
