McIlroy’s victory - Destined to be the best
No doubt about it — Rory McIlroy’s remarkable victory in the US Open has set the seal on a dazzling future.
Having imploded in the Masters at Augusta in April, he has more than proved his mettle, playing with remarkable composure to become the championship’s youngest winner since 1923.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny spoke for the nation in praising the young golfer for a victory that lifted everyone, as he said it was an achievement to be treasured. The country could certainly do with a lift.
The Golfing Union of Ireland is to be congratulated for putting in place the structures that has produced three recent Major winners — Pádraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and now 22-year-old McIlroy.
Aspiring golfers and sportsmen and sportswomen everywhere will take encouragement from his mantra as a 14-year-old: “Take one shot at a time. And don’t try to get too ahead of yourself.”
Now he has the world of golf at his feet.
