Scrappage scheme should be extended

CAN the Government please extend the scrappage scheme for old cars when buying a new one and make it a permanent and ongoing facility to the public.

The scheme does not need to abandoned altogether, but the public would accept a reduction in the amount paid to a dealership in these challenging times. The current amount is €1,250 down from €1,500 for a vehicle 10 years old or more.

Perhaps the government could reduce this sum to around €1,000 to make it more affordable for the taxpayer and vary it with notice as the economic situation demands.

It could also be increased in better times. The scheme has undoubtedly promoted jobs and investment in the motor trade and has taken the risk out of buying a used car to save money.

I implore the powers that be to look again at something that is in everybody’s interest and extend the scrappage scheme that has been a popular government policy.
