We still don’t know what atheism stands for

ONE has to hand it to RTÉ for giving the nation a much needed humorous lift in the guise of the recent lunchtime news interview with Richard Dawkins and sponsored by our friends at Atheist Ireland — God bless them.

The interview itself was beyond parody, rather like a belated April Fool’s joke. We learned little or nothing about what atheism stands for.

Hard questions were scrupulously avoided — the 20th century history has already given the game away in terms of gulags, death camps and killing fields.

For an ideology which is supposed to have cast off all vestiges of religious belief its obsession with same borders on paranoia and appears to be its sole raison d’etre.

The interview merely confirmed one’s suspicions that atheism essentially remains an ideology for pimpled adolescents and nutty professors.

Once again thanks to RTÉ and Richard Dawkins for such welcome light relief.
