State attacks its own citizens in Corrib stand-off

THE latest distasteful incident involving the Corrib gas controversy has brought out the usual character attacks on those opposing the project, with vague mutterings of “left-wing activists” and “professional protesters” being bandied about.
State attacks its own citizens in Corrib stand-off

This is part of an attempt to smokescreen what is going on in northwest Mayo which, in my opinion, is a sustained attack by the State on a community for acting in what it believes to be the best interests of itself and of Ireland.

Readers who are curious or interested to know what is going on there should not be swayed by sound bite accusations from politicians, senior gardaí or vested business interests.

This issue is too important for that. Please research the real story for yourselves, by reading Lorna Siggins’ excellent book Once Upon A Time in the West, seeing the documentary film The Pipe, or researching online. Just half an hour viewing on YouTube will answer the question as to who is really inciting violence and fear in that part of the world (and it isn’t the protesters).

This local issue is of national importance as it defines the way the State treats its citizens when big business interests are a priority, to the detriment of our economic, social and environmental well-being.
