Forget Ireland, Obama should visit Poland instead

IN reading Mr Dave Reilly’s comment regarding Dr Michael Murphy’s invitation (March 26) to have President Barack Obama lecture at UCC, I agree that the offer should be withdrawn.

Forget Ireland, Obama should visit Poland instead

In recent years, Ireland and the US have drifted from being close friends to what can now be described as barely tolerated acquaintances. This is evidenced by the sharp drop in tourism from the US to Ireland in recent years. Also, US companies are leaving Ireland for more welcoming shores. However, do not blame Obama for the genocide of Native Americans, or the incarceration of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo.

His ancestors had no correlation with the Great Plains Indian wars, or the decision to imprison suspected terrorists at Gitmo. On the contrary, he and the US Attorney General tried unsuccessfully to close Guantanamo but were stymied by Congress. Personally, having been summoned to assist in the restoration of utilities at the World Trade Center site from the day after the September 11 attack when the site was still in flames until three weeks later, I can assure you that I feel more at ease having these guys at Guantanamo, then preparing to slam another plane carrying a young Cork city mother and baby into a building.
