We have to change — for our children’s sake

MICHAEL LOWRY is a decent honourable servant of the people, Haughey wasn’t bribed, John O’Donoghue hated limos, the Catholic Church never put the interests of rapists ahead of the protection of children and Gerry Adams was never in the IRA.

We have to change — for our children’s sake

I am so relieved. For a moment there, I thought that I was living in a beautiful, but bankrupt country, that’s ruled by thieving idiots, guided by perverts and financed by bankers with MBAs in money laundering from the Tony Soprano University.

What are we cribbing about? We let this happen. We sat there while Bertie got all teary eyed defending himself against accusations that were never made and then like drugged-up lemmings we marched to the polling booths to put him back in power. Again and again we accepted the lies and the downright callous disregard for the inherent decency of our nation.

Are we now going to sit back and watch Fianna Fáil, with a straight face, accuse others of being in the pockets of big business? If we are ever to live up to the ideals of 1916 we have to radically alter the way we behave. We cannot continue to be a banana republic. We will change because we are better than this. We must change as our children will never forgive us if we don’t.
