Gender imbalance

WILLIAM MONGEY declares the fact that a female candidate expected “solidarity from another female candidate” in the election to be “sexism” (March 2).

The fact is that membership of the Dáil has been nearly 90% male and is not about to change much as a result of the election.

This is a major issue, not just for women, but for society at large.

It highlights the fact that Irish politics marginalises the talents, interests and perspectives of the half of the population that is female.

Members of the male population, which comprise nearly 90% of the Dáil, should, therefore, not be complaining about the mere mention of ways of remedying the imbalance in Dáil membership.
