Yet another giveaway by the government

IN the last days of our present government — now without the Greens — it decided to oppose its own programme of government, giving up the declared aim of keeping Ireland a GM-free country, and siding with the pro-GM-lobby in Europe.

At a time when agriculture has just been identified as a major contributor to the recovery of the Irish economy, this is exactly the wrong decision, doing irreparable damage to the future of the Irish food industry.

To whom are we going to sell our food when 70% of all Europeans don’t want GM-food? May I say that this free giveaway of a hugely valuable asset to Irish food is just a continuation of an already impressive line of past Irish free giveaways: Irish fishing rights, Irish gas fields, Irish sugar industry ...
