Justice at last in Haiti

IT IS heartening to see that Haiti’s monstrous former dictator, Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier, has failed, thus far at least, in his sleight-of-hand attempt to gain access to the millions of dollars he has stashed away in currently-frozen Swiss bank accounts. Instead, he is facing serious criminal charges in Haiti.

However, we cannot safely presume that he will at last be held to account for his crimes — Duvalier has escaped justice before, and may well do so again.

During his time in power, from 1971 to 1986, thousands of Haitians were killed, many others were tortured, and hundreds of thousands fled the country.
