Save our horses

RECENT media coverage on the plight of the abandoned horses and the proposed cull of these misfortunate animals prompted me to write to your paper.

Save our horses

It seems ironic that Goffs recently recorded significant increased revenue on horse sales and yet the reality for thousands of these noble creatures is certain and painful death, either from starvation and neglect, or being put down. During the years of the Celtic Tiger one of the status symbols for the “nouveau riche” was a share in a horse.

Now, of course, Ireland is a changed landscape and the Irish horse industry needs to take responsibility for these abandoned horses. It is to their shame that with all the wealth generated for this industry, the very creatures they purport to cherish, are quite simply left to die under the most appalling and barbaric circumstances.
