Cycle lanes no help to struggling shops
During that time I did not see one cyclist, but I did see Meath County Council, in its wisdom, having men paint bicycle lanes on the road.
Incidentally, the vehicle used by the workers was from Northern Ireland, which would suggest they were contractors. The bicycle lane passes many shops which depend almost entirely on passing motorists whose numbers have dwindled since the M4 and the slip road were built a few years ago.
One shop has had double yellow lines down for some time, yet the road is wide enough even with cars parked. I saw several motorists ignoring not just the double yellow lines but also the new markings for the cycle lane.
What is Meath County Council up to? Shops all over the country are struggling to stay in business.
Further, if they must have work done on the roads, why not at least give the jobs to the unemployed in this part of the country?
