Call an election now
In a bid to assuage the disquiet felt by international investors, the Government must introduce a series of hairshirt budgets with swingeing cuts and tax hikes.
It is obvious the FF/Green coalition is devoid of credibility and resolve. Its mandate has been compromised by malfeasance, corruption and scandalous waste, not to mention pandering to the whims of vested interests.
If Fianna Fáil foists budget austerity measures on hard-pressed citizens it may well translate into decimation of the party at the polls in a general election. If the coalition is interested in preserving any modicum of decency and patriotism, the only course open to it is to hold a general election.
There is no other credible alternative available to the Taoiseach. In the long-term economic interests of the country, Mr Cowen must exercise his constitutional prerogative and seek a dissolution of the Dáil without undue delay. Otherwise, the economic sovereignty of the country may be jeopardised – not to mention Fianna Fáil’s electoral prospects.
