In praise of Mullen
Firstly, Senator Mullen has done the state some considerable service by highlighting the obvious tacit acceptance of expense abuse by some members of the Oireachtas.
Given the nature and manner of the revelation, it is perfectly understandable that he would not wish to name the source of the story.
It is enough that he brought the practice to public attention.
In addition, given Senator Mullen’s very courageous stance during the recent undemocratic and uncritical railroading of the Civil Partnership Bill through the Oireachtas, there lingers the suspicion that certain sinister elements may be using this issue as a ploy to have a go at him. For the overall health of the democratic process we need more representatives of the calibre of Senator Mullen, not fewer.
