Dáil’s tail end

IN the Dáil on Thursday, former ceann comhairle John (‘The Bull’) O’Donohue described Labour party leader Eamon Gilmore as a “gadfly flying around the smelly tail of an old cow” (Irish Examiner, July 8).

It was an apt description not of Mr Gilmore but of Mr O’Donoghue’s own party, Fianna Fáil.

Mr Gilmore quite justifiably seeks to sting and provoke some signs of life from that old cow and its smelly old tail.

It seems an appropriate comment to end a Dáil session presided over by a government that has the support of less than one-quarter of the electorate.
