Israel has reason not to trust aid convoys

IN his letter (June 9) Brian C Murphy wonders if EU aid to Gaza went by road where he says it would be subject to the massive tail-back of goods entering through Israel.

Israel has reason not to trust aid convoys

Any tailbacks are a result of the need to ensure no military materiel is concealed in such deliveries. The Hamas regime is still committed to the destruction of Israel and the establishment of a caliphate in all lands ever ruled by Islam, probably also including Spain or, as they call it, al-Andalus.

Mr Murphy then proposes as a solution that the containers be shipped to the port in Gaza. ā€œIf the Israeli government trusts the EU, I cannot see how this could be a problem, ā€ he says.

The likely problem is that Israel does not completely trust the EU to screen humanitarian aid convoys sufficiently carefully; the lesson of the Katrine, intercepted some years ago loaded with armaments, showed the true intentions of the Palestinian ā€˜resistance’.
