Company’s role in wall project challenged

AS one of those who protested outside Cement Roadstone Holdings (CRH) annual general meeting in Dun Laoghaire, I wish to comment on Brian O’Mahony’s report (May 6).

The wall that Israel is building within the occupied Palestinian West Bank is not “450km long”, but closer to 700km.

In justifying CRH’s involvement in providing cement for this construction, CRH chairman Kieran McGowan and CEO Myles Lee are being cynical in pointing out that the multinational also sells to the Palestinian Authority.

The fact is that in 2004 the International Court of Justice, the world’s most eminent legal institution, declared the wall to be illegal and urged “third parties” to offer no assistance to Israel in furthering its construction.

The behaviour of the Palestinian Authority cannot be instanced to provide an alibi for CRH: two wrongs, proverbially, don’t make a right.
