Generous gesture at charity book sale

ONCE a month the Irish Cancer Society charity shop on Castle Street, Cork, puts on sale the books and other items they have been displaying in the window.

Generous gesture at charity book sale

When passing the store I saw a book, Tom Barry, IRA Freedom Fighter, that I wanted very much.

I am interested in the Anglo-Irish war and Irish civil war and wanted to know more about this famous Corkman and his part in Irish history. On Friday morning, April 1, therefore, I got in line outside the store hoping to buy the book. However, I was not early enough and when I did get inside the store someone else had already taken the book. It was my fault for not arriving earlier.

As I was leaving the store, I saw a teenage girl with the book about Barry.

I asked her if I could have it and I would pay for it at the counter. Initially she said no, but as I turned to leave she reconsidered saying I could have it, but she would not take any money.

I regret I did not get her name. I am very grateful to that young lady – she was very kind. Her generous act was more than I expected.
