If bishops didn’t know child abuse was wrong, why did they try so hard to hide it?

IN his letter (March 20), Jason FitzHarris seems to conflate what the Catholic Church “thinks” with what particular members of the clergy or hierarchy think or do.

If bishops didn’t know child abuse was wrong, why did they try so hard to hide it?

But how he sees the Bishop of Ferns’s appeal for funds to compensate victims of clerical abuse as a form of “blaming” the laity for the sins of some clergy is beyond me.

However that particular bishop would have chosen to raise those funds, all of them ultimately would come from the laity, even if raised by selling off church property.
