It’s time to challenge an outmoded status quo

CANON James Kelly (Letters, March 16) says regarding the civil partnership bill that “with this legislation the Ireland of religion that we know is effectively sundered”.

It’s time to challenge an outmoded status quo

I put it to the canon that it is his own church, with its still-emerging child abuse scandals and the enforcement of oaths of secrecy on the victims of that abuse, which has done this.

It is time for the church-abused Ireland that I left some years ago to grow up and stand on its own feet as an egalitarian adult society instead of being frightened by the threat of monsters in the shadows from those like the canon who have a vested interest in maintaining an outmoded status quo.
