Lost at Sea Scheme - Investigation is essential

WE have repeatedly suggested that an investigative authority with real powers and ambition be established to probe matters of public concern.

This authority should have the power to initiate prosecutions.

The Lost at Sea Scheme seems to be yet another argument for such an authority. It was established in 2001 by Frank Fahey.

Under the scheme, owners of boats lost at sea could apply for grant aid for new boats. It is believed that 75% of the money paid out went to two of Mr Fahey’s constituents.

That an Oireachtas committee, one with a Government majority, blocked an investigation by the Ombudsman – for only the second time in 26 years – strengthens that argument for such an authority.

It could establish if the scheme was administered properly, if the Oireachtas vote was correct or if it was another example of self-regulation being abused.
