How easy it is to be cynical. I have listened to several TV and radio programmes about Defence Minister Willie O’Dea’s resignation and the theme recurs throughout: the Greens will do anything to stay in power and avoid an election.

I am not so sure about that reason for the departure of Minister O’Dea. I like to believe basic ethical teachings and beliefs about right and wrong must count for something.

For my part, I thank God Fianna Fáil does not have a majority.

And equally I feel thankful that the Greens are exercising a measure of restraint over the so-called Soldiers of Destiny.

Some people might call them “wobbly” and others might dismiss them as “tree-huggers” but, like the PDs, the Greens maintain a vital and perpetual watch over the one party in this State that I honestly believe can never be trusted.
