What’s wrong with a little contemplation?

ONCE again there are calls from some quarters for RTÉ to discontinue relaying the Angelus bells over the airwaves.

However, some of those lobbying for this removal either misunderstand the modified version of the Angelus, which can best be described as a call to reflect, or else they are engaging in an opportunistic and exploitative attack on the Catholic Church because of its current difficulties.

I would have thought that as society sinks ever further into the mire of moral and social degeneracy, it is almost beyond comprehension that an inoffensive 60 seconds of contemplation as broadcast on radio and television should cause some people such offence.
