THE fundamental question is whether we need, or want, the Seanad. If, as I believe, the answer is no, then the question of reform does not arise.

Let’s end the Seanad muppet show

There are a few honourable and sincere people who are opposed to abolition but, these apart, the lobby consists almost entirely of party politicians, particularly senators.

When interviewed these people usually begin, rather pompously, with the words “I have been privileged to be a member of the Seanad,” etc.
