I NOTE that President Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work, despite the notable handicap of coming to office just 11 days before the close of nominations for the prize.

If a week is a long time in politics, then 11 days must be an eternity in the eyes of the Nobel committee. By way of contrast, Mahatma Ghandi was never awarded the prize, despite being nominated five times.
