‘Creeping fundamentalists’ on the other side

THE recent March for Life in Dublin received little or no coverage in the Irish Examiner despite the fact that upwards of 5,000 people participated in it.

‘Creeping fundamentalists’ on the other side

In recent weeks certain commentators with a pro-abortion agenda have made chirpy but clumsy attempts to attach their freshly minted soundbite of “creeping fundamentalism” to the pro-life movement and in particular to those thousands of citizens who participated in this very successful march.

Perhaps this pejorative use of the fundamentalist label is a crude attempt at marginalising the voice of the pro-life majority. The march highlighted the most important human rights cause of our era. People of all political shades, from all faiths and none and from minority groups in all their diversity, walked in solidarity. I appeal to the more broadminded supporters of abortion to be sufficiently open-minded to reexamine the basis for their arguments. The only “creepy fundamentalists’’ I observed during the march were the handful of angry abortion zealots who shouted abuse at the peaceful procession celebrating life.
