‘Free run’ for people who caused the mess

IN his letter (July 18), Brian Abbot hit the nail on the head when he said we should expect those who caused the mess, including members of the Government, to make sacrifices before sacrificing all those who are going to suffer cuts in public services, pay and jobs.

This is far from what is happening in the spin that is being put out in relation to the McCarthy report.

For example, former ministers Mary O’Rourke and John McGuinness got the run of the airwaves in recent days to lecture us about solutions to problems they and their colleagues caused. Day in day out for the past 12 years they supported the policies which have brought the country to the verge of bankruptcy.

Having those people tell us, unchallenged by the RTÉ interviewer, what pain it is necessary for the rest of us to endure to repair the damage that they and their colleagues caused is not acceptable. Far from members of the Government being asked to make sacrifices for the damage they have caused, they are being indulged by their usual cheerleaders in the media.
