Brussels free to take on more powers
This would allow the EU, with unanimity in the Commission and the European Parliament, to take action and adopt measures even if “the treaties have not provided the necessary powers”.
That is, it would allow Brussels to give itself further powers that are not conferred on it by the treaties. No ratification by national parliaments or referendums would be required.
Is this what the Yes side calls making the EU more “efficient”?
Under the Nice Treaty, the article applies to internal market rules only, but it would be extended by Lisbon to all areas of the treaty.
It is one of a many provisions that confirm the Lisbon Treaty as an anti-democratic document.
In October, when we will be presented with exactly the same treaty, I will be voting No once again to save Irish and European democracy.
