IN his letter headlined ‘The Church always pays for the sins of the past’ (June 15), Rev Dr D Vincent Twomey refers to the lecture by Fr Edward Flanagan of Boys Town, Nebraska, in the Savoy Cinema, Cork, in 1946.

A student at the time, I was at that inspiring, yet humiliating, lecture.

Fr Flanagan’s reputation had preceded him with the result that there was a very large attendance of lay people, but as far as I could see (and this has been corroborated by others) not a priest, brother or nun (all easily identifiable at that time) was present.
