Bonus maths

WE hear yet again of the low percentage of Leaving Cert students taking honours maths (May 29).

Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe’s response to previous recommendations that a bonus for maths should be introduced is that he believes it would make no difference.

Would the minister not use the scientific method and test out his hypothesis with a trial period of a few years?
