Education first

YOUR editorial claim (June 1) that free third-level education no longer seems sustainable is not correct.

Education first

If the hugely expensive and totally unnecessary proposal to build a metro in Dublin is abandoned, there will be enough money to fund all levels of education.

Instead of the present moronic policy of cutting back on bus numbers, a reliable service should be provided on existing and extended bus lanes. This would provide a very inexpensive public transport system. It also has the advantage that with the money saved, contrary to your editorial’s assertion, an improved education system would be sustainable. Money spent on education gives a high rate of return and ensures our workforce is competitive.
