IT is pathetic to listen to the incessant empty apologies of various religious groups who were charged with the care of vulnerable children in our society. The chronicle of abuse is almost beyond belief. But it did happen, and it happened in our community.

As a nation we have a share of the blame not just for dumping our children through the courts and other means into the custody of these people, but for not listening.

Why is the Catholic church acting like a corporation, hiding behind the equivalent of a company’s limited liability, insisting its various wings are autonomous? The answer is simple – as coined during the Clinton campaign in 1992: “It’s the economy, stupid.”
