False economy to scrap Metro North project

INFORMED readers will readily accept most of Ivan Yates’s arguments and solutions in relation to the dire state of the public finances (May 21).

However, his dismissive “cheerio to the €5bn Metro North” in Dublin shows a lack of awareness of the value of capital projects, in particular Metro North, to encourage economic recovery and growth.

In an economic downturn, it is wise to avail of the lower construction costs to build as much as possible, both to keep people in jobs and provide the necessary infrastructure to take advantage of the economic upswing.
