IRISH fishermen have welcomed the EU’s admission that the common fisheries policy has been a failure and will fully participate in talks to reform it.

But in a sign of the major battle ahead, the Federation of Irish Fishermen (FIF) said they do not accept much of the EU’s analysis of the current situation, including that nine out of 10 species are over fished.

The European Commission adopted a Green Paper on the future of the EU’s Fisheries Policy that analyses the shortcomings of the policy and launches a public consultation on how the problems can be tackled.
