PIERCE Martin (Irish Examiner, Letters, 14 April) is wrong when he states that the 1916 Proclamation was rammed down the throats of the Irish people.

I must defend the reputations of my grandfather Padraig O Caoimh who served in an outpost of the GPO and of my great-aunt Jennie Wyse Power in whose restaurant in 21 Henry Street the Proclamation had been signed.

My grandfather was interned in Frongoch after the Rising and the Wyse Powers lost their home and all their possessions in the destruction of the area.
