RTÉ likes to bring you the news inside and out

On last Thurdsay’s Six One News, we heard RTÉ’s director-general Cathal Goan talking about making large savings.

He was taken out of his office to stand outside Montrose for the interview.

Earlier we had business correspondent David Murphy, reporter Will Goodbody, political editor David Davin-Power and economics editor George Lee all reporting from assorted anonymous sites around Dublin and David Murphy again — back in studio.

Surely, these outside broadcasts are mini-jollies which could be done without, necessitating, as they do, movement of equipment, sound people, lighting people, camera people, assorted gangers and acolytes, not to mention a huge carbon footprint.

The Six One News, needing two readers, is another place for savings.

Personally, I look forward to weekends when we get a news programme read by proper newsreaders (one at a time).

I remember “Hermes” in the Munster Express, back in the 1970s, suggesting Montrose was the most overstaffed place in Ireland with a couple of people working and hundreds to change the reel in the Kodak box Brownie.

Nothing has changed.
