The number of people on the Live Register of unemployed jumped by 26,700 during February, according to the latest figures released by the Central Statistics Office. The unemployment rate at the end of the month was 10.4%, but it is increasing daily.

If the job losses continue at the present rate, the unemployment figure could reach 450,000 by the end of the year. This would amount to over 13% unemployment, but the way the Government has consistently underestimated the deterioration in the economy, the figures are likely to be even worse.

Unemployment figures cannot be forgotten like yesterday’s news, because they are also a reflection of the unpleasant reality that has befallen thousands of people. The victims are not just those who lost their jobs, but their dependants. As a society, we must make sure that these people are given the support services they require.
