WE are appalled at the composition of the inquiry into the Roscommon abuse scandal. One of the most basic principles of natural justice is “nemo iudex in causa sua” (no one should be a judge in their own cause).

The inclusion of two senior HSE officials and an employee of Barnardos, presumably heavily funded by the HSE, does little for the perception of the proclaimed “independence” of the inquiry. It would appear the group was brought together in haste to allay public concerns. In hindsight, it now seems appropriate for them to do the honourable thing and voluntarily step aside.
