THE outgoing US administration has maintained its complete lack of any sense of irony (not to mention sensitivity) right to the end of its days.

In relation to last week’s lunch hosted by President Bush for all the former presidents and president-elect Barack Obama, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino observed, with the sloppy use of English so beloved of Bush himself and presumably with a straight face, that “the president’s style is always to be one that’s a little bit prepared early”.

Iraq anybody?
